Depending on where you are in your faith, this might not make sense. But I’ll say it anyway: God used my dissertation to shape me—far beyond academia.
When I started my doctorate, I assumed I’d become a full-time professor, maybe publish research, teach, and follow a traditional academic path. While those things are still possible, that’s not why God had me pursue this journey.
To be honest, I struggled with this dissertation. Not because I lacked skill—but because I couldn’t interpret the feedback I was getting. My chair was trying, but we weren’t connecting. I was overwhelmed, confused, and praying for a sign to quit.
And then God sent one.
One day after church, a black bird flew into my car. I instantly screamed, “God told me to finish my dissertation!” And even after that moment, I still asked Him—“Are you sure? Just say the word and I’ll walk away.” 😅
But I stayed.
And when my foundational document finally got approved (after 18 months!), I attended a writing intensive, knocked out Chapter 2—and everything shifted. I realized something deep:
God speaks to me through writing.
My master’s degree taught me how to write.
My doctorate is teaching me how to WRITE—with purpose, clarity, and healing power.
When I stopped fighting the process and let God lead, the feedback made sense. The vision got clearer. And my energy shifted.
That clarity led to more than just academic progress—it birthed The Mommy Movement, a healing support group for high-achieving mothers who are tired of carrying it all alone. Women like me.
Women who’ve always been strong, but never really had a space to soften.
Women who are breaking generational cycles, one journal page at a time.
Women who were told to “keep it all together”—but are now choosing to heal instead.
This isn’t just therapy.
It’s transformation.
It’s community.
It’s God-ordained.
And I now know—I was never meant to just complete a dissertation. I was meant to become through it.
